Iraq, 2009. Little Hamoudi (10) is totally obsessed with soccer. Just as the rest of the
world, he and his friends are eagerly looking forward to the Champions League finale
FC Barcelona-‐‑Manchester United. The long awaited clash between Messi and Ronaldo.
But then Hamoudi’s television breaks down…
Once, I saw a picture of a little child, in a war zone, next to their dead father’s body. The
desperation and sadness of the toddler, trying to revive the body of his dead father, are
haunting and have stayed with me for a long time. It became a source of inspiration
for ‘Baghdad Messi’ The absolute desolation of the helpless child, amidst the chaos, and the
indifference of others are tangible. Personally, I have experienced war at first hand, but
nothing as dramatic as this. I wanted to explore these emotions, and import them into
Hamoudi’s story, which is based on childhood memories of mine.
